RULE 7 – Trade the tie for a pocket square
You want to look like you care – and know – what is and isn’t appropriate to wear during all occasions.
The tie has indeed gone the way of the Dodo Bird – except for the most formal occasions – say your own wedding or sentencing. This is particularly in summer when that closed collar could help you pass out. Just an open collar and a jacket can look a little too casual.
But it’s OK to replace the tie with a pocket square in your breast pocket.
Moreover, if you are headed anywhere social except a black-tie wedding, it’s perfectly appropriate to leave your collar open – and in summer this allows for more air flow. There’s no need to look like an aging roué though. Pick a moderately patterned square and fold it so that just ½ an inch or so shows.
That’s the new discrete formal.
