Shirt, tie and suit. It’s the professional man’s armor of choice.
Putting it all together on a daily basis can be hard.
We suggest that only one of the three component parts be patterned. The other two should be solid. It’s a simple rule that will lead to better results for most men.
Here Ed Norton illustrates the rule: his plaid suit is anchored by a solid white shirt and solid dark tie. And as a result, he looks good.
By not following this rule, you open yourself up to making the wrong pairings.
If you must wear two patterns, make sure they are of different styles, i.e. don’t wear stripes with stripes or checks with checks.
The fourth element of proper suit decorum Is a pocket square. There’s more leeway here since only 1/2″-1″ of it will show when it’s tucked in your jacket.
